Roy Barnes - Governor of Georgia

Just two years out of law school, after serving in the Cobb District Attorney's office, he was elected to the first of eight terms in the State Senate. After just two terms as a Senator, he was named Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Barnes served as Administration Floor Leader for Governor Joe Frank Harris from 1982 through 1989.

Roy also served on the Governor's Growth Strategies Commission and was Senate Chairman of the Constitutional Revision Committee. He was a member appointed and interim committees studying worker's compensation, services for the aged, child abuse and domestic violence, transportation, community services for the mentally disabled and the problems of the homeless.

Returning to the legislature in 1993 after an earlier tenure in the Senate and a run for the governorship in 1990, Roy currently serves in the House of Representative representing the 33rd House District and is Vice-Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and member of the Rules and Banks and Banking Committees.

Roy is married to Marie Dobbs Barnes. They have three children--Harlan, Allison and Alyssa. The family attends the First United Methodist Church of Marietta. He is senior partner in the law firm of Barnes, Browning, Tanksley and Casurella in Marietta, Georgia.

	A native of Mableton, Georgia, Roy Barnes developed an early fascination with politics listening to political discussions as he worked in the family general store. He majored in history and served on the debate team at the University of Georgia before continuing his education at UGA Law School. He served as president of the student bar association and was the law school's outstanding senior in 1972.
