John G Rowland - Governor of Connecticut
JOHN G. ROWLAND was born in Waterbury, Connecticut. He received a bachelor's degree from Villanova University in 1979. His public service career includes two terms in the Connecticut state legislature, from 1981 to 1985, and three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, from 1985 to 1991. He was elected Governor in November 1994, the youngest person ever elected to this office in Connecticut. He was reelected in November 1998 by an overwhelming margin. Income tax rates and taxes on businesses have been cut, and Governor Rowland has called for and passed reforms in the state welfare system. He serves as vice chair of NGA's Committee on Economic Development and Commerce.
On January 4, 1995, John G. Rowland was sworn in as Connecticut's 86th Governor. At 37, Rowland was the youngest person ever elected to the state's highest office. He is currently the youngest governor in the nation. Governor Rowland has a long history of public service. In 1980, at age 23, he was elected to the Connecticut State Legislature to represent the 73rd Assembly District. He served until 1984, when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives at age 27. He represented the Fifth Congressional District until 1990.
