Mike Huckabee - Governor of Arkansas
MIKE HUCKABEE was born in Hope, Arkansas. In 1972, he was elected Arkansas Boys State governor. In 1976 he graduated magna cum laude from Ouachita Baptist University after two-and-one-half years of study. . In 1993 he was elected lieutenant governor, and he was reelected in 1994 to a four-year term. On July 15, 1996, he was sworn in as Governor to complete the remainder of Governor Jim Guy Tucker's term of office
In his first legislative session, Governor Huckabee signed legislation creating ARKids First, a program that provides health insurance to children of working families who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford private coverage. He signed the first major, broad-based tax cut in state history and simplified the procedure for renewing car tags. Under his leadership, Arkansas' welfare rolls were reduced by 41.5 percent in sixteen months. He has written two books: Character Is the Issue, a book that chronicles his political career, and Kids Who Kill, a book that addresses juvenile violence. He was named the 1997 American Sportsfishing Association Man of the Year. Governor Huckabee is the first vice chair of the Southern Governors' Association and chair of the National Governors' Association Committee on Human Resources.
