Gros Ventre
Skilled buffalo hunters of the plains, the Algonquian-speaking Gros Ventre (Grgw Van' tru), "big belly". were once members of the Blackfeet Confederacy . They now share the Fort Belknap Reservation in northern Montana with the Assiniboine. Gros Ventre call themselves ÒAH-AH-NE-NINÓ meaning the White Clay People.late 1600's Gros Ventres plit from the Arapaho tribes.By late 1700Õs, they allied with the Blackfeet. Around this time, and again in early 1800Õs, smallpox decimated the Gros Ventre tribe.1878, they settled on Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana after becoming hostile enemies with the Blackfeet in 1861.
Fort Belknap The Fort Belknap Indian Reservation is located in northcentral Montana. The reservation is the homeland of the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine people.
